Is your glass half-empty or half-full?

Updated: Feb 24, 2022

You have probably had someone tell you to "look on the bright side" or to "see the cup as half full." Chances are good that the people who make these comments are positive thinkers. Researchers are finding more and more evidence pointing to the many benefits of positive thinking.

Positive thinking doesn't mean that you keep your head in the sand and ignore life's less pleasant situations. Positive thinking just means that you approach unpleasantness in a more positive and productive way.

You think the best is going to happen, not the worst. If the thoughts that run through your head are mostly negative, your outlook on life is more likely pessimistic. If your thoughts are mostly positive, you're likely an optimist - Someone who practices positive thinking. This was truly the hardest part of my recovery, but so worth the patience and outcome.

Health benefits that positive thinking may provide include:

1.Lower rates of depression

2.Lower levels of distress

3.Greater resistance to the common immune system

3.Better psychological and physical well being

4.Better cardiovascular health and reduced risk of strokes and heart problems

Want to expand your potential? It all starts with the thoughts that we have and our self-talk (the stories we tell to ourselves). Negative and limiting beliefs will contract our potential; positive, and loving thoughts will help it expand.

Positive thinking isn't just a soft and cakewalk feel–good term. Yes, it's great to simply “be happy,” but those moments of happiness are also critical for opening your mind to explore and build the skills that become so valuable in other areas of your life.

Finding ways to build happiness and positive emotions into your life — whether it is through meditation, writing, playing a podcast, or anything else — provides more than just a momentary decrease in stress and a few smiles.

Periods of positive emotion and unhindered exploration are when you see the possibilities for how your past experiences fit into your future life, when you begin to develop skills that blossom into useful talents later on, and when you spark the urge for further exploration and adventure.

To put it simply: seek love, play often, and be beautifully empowered. Your brain and heart will do the rest.
